We each have a life to live with its dreams, delights, suffering and frustration. We are also bound up with each other, for better or worse. Harold Douglas, owner of Hecklescar’s fishyard, believes he is a business genius but has run the business into the ground by dabbling in financial investments. When he hears that Peter Munro intends coming back to the town, he decides he must disappear. To do that he must sell up: the business, his house, and a strip of land occupied by an old farmhouse. What then of the folk who work in the yard: Jakey, Angela and the rest? What of Olivia who shares his home? What of the old couple living in the farmhouse, including Alice, who is sliding into dementia? She is the concern of her son Duncan and his wife Janet – and their daughter, Christine, who is the girlfriend of Hector, Duncan’s apprentice and Hercules son. Janet enlists the help of old banker John Hendry, who is grappling with the loss of his dearly loved wife. Then there is Peter Munro, whom Olivia rejected for Hercules. He is apparently a success, having made a fortune in property development in England. Yet Peter is plagued by doubts and regrets about his business dealings and his disturbed and estranged wife. How can Mrs Rostowski, his counsellor, help him? And what help is Oliver, Peter’s friend, to her? Then there is her van driving husband and amateur philosopher, Greg. What is it that Hercules fears in Peter’s return? Will Peter arrive in time? As the year runs down from summer into winter, there are times when John Hendry doubts that there is a way through for these folk. Yet does he not conclude that: ‘the sun will rise tomorrow, and they will rise with it and take up the life they threw over the chair last night? For we are all wrapped together in the bundle of life.
