It probably goes without saying that just about anyone, no matter who they are, if given the opportunity, would jump at a chance to become a Radio City Music Hall Rockette – at least that's what J. D. Handsome, the author of the lead story of this book, thought.Over the years he came to realize that it was not so much being an actual Rockette that mattered as it was experiencing the freedom they exhibited during their onstage performances. It seemed so effortless as they glided from one movement to the next, while being bathed in pink lights, and dazzling music, all the while smiling and looking as if they were having the time of their lives. And they probably were, but few realize the never-ending training they must endure to maintain the illusion they provide.Even though J.D. Handsome never managed to get anywhere near becoming a Rockette, the ashes of his desire never grew cold and died. It wasn't until he retired from the work-a-day world that he had time on his hands and, after a failed attempt at writing his memoir, he discovered he could write. He was able to put words and paragraphs together that were fun to read. They were entertaining.Suddenly the ashes of his heart's desire burst into flames as he realized he could, after all, satisfy his heart's desire, maybe not on stage as a Rockette, but he could mount the stages of the human mind and do exactly what he always wanted to do, what he felt he was born to do – entertain. Within the pages of this volume are the stories he created by stepping aside and permitting his characters to take over and tell the story while he did nothing more than copy the words and actions down on paper. He once quipped, The poetry in writing is the illusion it creates, and so it is.
