The story of an American from Missouri whose Irish-Greek wife disappears while visiting Northern Ireland. He fears she has been kidnapped for ritual purposes. He researches ancient texts searching for clues to solve her disappearance. His search takes him from Greece and Northern Ireland, to Harvard and the Arkansas Delta, Wyoming, Jordan's Petra, California, Alaska, Spain, and at last to Iceland. He is assisted in his search by an academic administrator, an Irish shaman, an Italian Druid shaman, a Spanish priest, and a nude Spanish scientist: they guide him with readings of quests in Don Quixote, Goethe's Faust, The Divine Comedy, and William Blake's Illustrations for Job, his poem Milton and his poem Jerusalem. With this help, he learns to identify and deal with the forces he believes have taken his wife. Footnotes and end notes provide translations for quotations in Greek, Irish, Spanish, German, Italian, and Icelandic, and sources for texts and illustrations used to promote the narrative.
