"Codes of the West," the first volume of Matt's Wild West Discovery Series, presents an opportunity to consider the underlying character values that are familiar to most anyone who has encountered a "western" either in print or on film. Most of the heroes in the fictional stories of the Old West qualify as heroes because they exemplify the values expressed in the Code of the West. Given that such values have long been an integral part of the western hero's character, these cowboy codes will continue to be an essential feature in each of the volumes of Matt's Wild West Discovery Series.This book is part of a new series of activity books about the American Wild West. The series is designed to educate the reader in an interactive yet entertaining manner through exposure to "primary sources" that were available mostly as elements of American pop culture during the childhood years of their grandparents and great-grandparents! In their day, especially the 1930's through the 1970's, they were heavily influenced by sources like dime novels, movies, radio programs, comic books, and television. Thus, this series will attempt to focus our learning about the Wild West by way of paper-pencil activities based upon information that can be gleaned from a sampling of those resources.
