From 2008 - 2012, as the United Franchise Group's CEO, I did a blog each week. Not realizing that this time would be would be looked at in equal terms as the "Great Depression" of 1929, I just went on, week after week, communicating my thoughts to employees and franchisees alike. I recently had a chance to review them and realized that there are so many lessons that could be learned. Since 2008, there have been many startups that have never been through anything like that time. This will certainly give you nuggets to use if, and when, the economy takes another dip down. Enjoy this book, and I sure hope you never have to go through it yourselves, but if you do, you now have some suggestions and directions to get through it a little easier. Our company had grown for over 20 years, year after year, and we expected the same usual growth. We didn't see it (the Great Recession) coming as bad as it did. The time to change is before you have to, we just didn't recognize the magnitude of this downturn.Day after day, I had to be the face of the company, staying positive and making the moves to get us through it all alive. It was like life or death for the company that I started in 1986, when I was 23 years old. The idea of passing the company onto my kids was no longer even a thought. We just had to figure out how to survive this crazy time. Each chapter is one day's blog post, that I chose to include in this book. I've also added some key takeaways on many pages, and in the back, I've added a list of moves we made to stay alive as a company.
