At university in the late 1960s, Julie meets David.
She is thoughtful, self-possessed and quietly ambitious. He is brilliant, charismatic, impossible to pin down. Around them gather friends, lovers, housemates and fellow students as they move through seminars, demonstrations, productions, parties and departures, discovering that adulthood is less a destination than a series of improvisations.
Told largely from Julie’s perspective, but increasingly interrupted by David’s own voice – especially in a sequence of postcards sent from across Europe – The Long Look follows a friendship that survives distance, misunderstanding, reinvention and time. Observant, funny, tender and unsentimental, these poems trace not a love affair but something rarer: the long afterlife of one person’s influence upon another.
