How much of yourself would you surrender for the promise of eternity?
Quinn Ryan has never been a perfect believer—but he’s been a loyal one. Inside the Church, obedience is survival. He follows the rules, confesses his doubts, and climbs the Bridge step by step, trusting that every sacrifice will secure his future across lifetimes.
Then his father returns.
Elijah Ryan is declared. Dangerous. Suppressive. A man erased. Quinn has been trained to turn away without hesitation. But when Elijah reappears in public, unafraid and unbroken, the certainty Quinn has built his life on begins to fracture.
Through Elijah, Quinn meets Larkin Childs, charismatic, steady, and immune to intimidation. Larkin doesn’t flinch at threats or “ethics interviews.” He offers Quinn something radical: a choice. As their friendship deepens, so do Quinn’s questions.
The Org notices.
Interrogations replace guidance. “Ethics” becomes surveillance. Rumors become leverage. And somewhere behind closed doors waits the Hole, an airless punishment room designed to crush resistance and rebuild obedience. Watching from above is Warren Tresaster, Executive Director of the Calgary Org, who sees Quinn not as a soul to save but as a liability to control. If faith won’t keep Quinn compliant, fear will. And if fear fails, Warren will manufacture ruin.
Shattered Faith: The Cost of Eternity is a gripping work of psychological drama fiction and contemporary religious fiction that pulls readers inside a high-control belief system at the moment it begins to crack. Grounded in real first-person accounts, this powerful scientology fiction explores indoctrination, coercion, and the cost of questioning authority.
Perfect for readers of religious fiction books, cult fiction books, and fiction with cults, this novel goes beyond suspense. It is deeply character-driven literary fiction, an intimate portrait of loyalty, fear, love, and awakening. Fans of novels about religious trauma, books about religious trauma, and any searching for a compelling religious trauma book will find both emotional intensity and hard-earned hope here.
More than a story of control, Shattered Faith is also psychological recovery fiction, a journey through doubt, grief, and the terrifying freedom of self-definition. Readers drawn to fiction about trauma recovery and literary fiction self-discovery will connect with Quinn’s struggle to reclaim his voice after years of silence. It stands alongside the most haunting manipulation books and unforgettable self-discovery fiction books, revealing how belief can shape identity and how courage can reshape it.

A.L. Beck was born in Hamilton, Ontario, known as "Steel City", and grew up in an unusual family situation. Raised by their maternal grandparents, who later adopted them as an adult, they spent much of their childhood in a quieter, more insular world than most of their peers. Books became their constant companions, and school was the place where they felt most at home. That early love of reading turned into a long academic journey. Beck went on to earn three degrees in literature, including a PhD completed while caring for their aging grandparents. Their work has explored vampires, Catholic imagery, Anne Rice's fiction, and Pre-Raphaelite art. Along the way, they have presented papers and lectures on topics ranging from Catholic influence in gothic writing to Canadian speculative fiction. The spark for Shattered Faith arrived after Beck watched Leah Remini's series Scientology and the Aftermath and was struck by the scale of harm described by former members. Without their own first-hand experience, they turned to fiction as the most honest way to contribute. Beck wanted to write about broken people in different ways, and chose Scientology as the structure that breaks Quinn from the inside.Beck now lives in Calgary, Alberta, "Cow Town", with their partner, four dogs, and a housemate. When not writing, Beck is usually in the garden, watching animation and anime, reading horror, baking, or looking after foster dogs, including one memorable foster who never left and became part of the family.
