In the summer of 1997, Pat Rodgers set out to kayak around Ireland.
There were no smartphones, no weather apps and no easy way to know what lay ahead. Travelling on a shoestring, carrying everything needed in a sea kayak, the journey depended on paper charts, judgement, local knowledge and the willingness to keep going when plans fell apart.
What began as a shared adventure gradually became something more personal, as Pat made his way around some of the wildest and most exposed stretches of the Irish coast — through fog, headwinds, long crossings, unexpected encounters and days when the weather made progress impossible.
Based on the diary he kept at the time, Chasing Tides is the story of a 1,500-kilometre journey around Ireland and of a very different era of adventure: when getting lost was a real possibility, information was scarce, and the next stage of the journey often had to be worked out along the way.
It is a story of sea kayaking, friendship, uncertainty, stubbornness and the simple freedom of travelling with no more than you can carry.
