Janet Chrispeels, Professor Emeritus, joined the University of California, San Diego to serve as UCSD's founder of the Joint Doctorate in Educational Leadership. This required a move from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she served on the faculty from 1993-2006 and directed the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education Center for Educational Leadership and Effective Schools. Her educational career began as a political activist, which provided her with insights into how inequality was built into the American educational system. She was employed by the San Diego County Office of Education where she co-developed the Effective Schools Program as well as several parent involvement initiatives. She has authored several books and numerous articles, served on several editorial boards and advisory committees, and as President of the International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement.
