Reflecting the rapid progress in cleanup technology since the previous edition, this revised and expanded fourth edition of The Basics of Oil Spill Cleanup covers current cleanup techniques, how oil spills are measured and detected, and the properties of the oil, and its long-term fate in the environment. It also deals with why, how often, and where oil spills occur as well as the chemical composition and physical properties of various oil types. The chapters describe surface and remote sensing technologies used to detect and track oil slicks, and methods to contain oil on water (booms and ancillary equipment) and recover oil from the water surface (skimmers, sorbents, and manual recovery). The author discusses the use of pumps, in-situ burning, and chemical agents, such as dispersants, for oil removal. He also addresses oil-contaminated shorelines and the effects and behavior of oil on different ecosystems and the various organisms within them. Merv Fingas, M.Sc., MBA, PhD., has worked in the field of oil spill technology for more than 50 years. He was chief of Environment Canada’s Environmental Emergencies Technology Centre in Ottawa, Canada, for more than 30 years. After this, Merv continued research and projects in the private sector in Edmonton, Alberta. Over the years, he has conducted research in spill dynamics and behaviour, studies of spill treating agents, in-situ burning of oil, and oil spill chemistry and analysis.
Dr. Fingas earned his doctorate in environmental sciences from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He also holds master’s degrees in science and in business from the University of Ottawa in Ontario. He also holds a bachelor's degree in the arts and technical training, in both machining and electronics.
Dr. Fingas has authored or co-authored more than 1000 technical reports and papers on various aspects of oil or chemical spills. These include topics such as oil emulsion formation, oil evaporation, testing and use of treating agents, studies of oil analysis and fingerprinting, in-situ oil burning, oil spill remote sensing, and personal protection equipment. This is his fourteenth book.
Dr. Fingas is on many editorial boards for scientific journals. He served as an editor of the Journal of Hazardous Materials for a six-year term and is currently an editor of two journals related to remote sensing. He is a reviewer for numerous journals. He is the chairman of the in-situ oil spill burning, the treating agent and the remote sensing subcommittees of ASTM F-20 on hazardous Materials. Dr. Fingas has been a member of several committees of the United States National Academy of Sciences on oil spill topics.
