Poverty and the State

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Poverty and the State' is a comprehensive examination of the evolution of social welfare and the historical efforts of the British state to mitigate destitution. Written by Gilbert Slater, a distinguished economist and social reformer, the work provides a detailed survey of how public policy has navigated the complex relationship between economic structures and social necessity. The text traces the development of social legislation from the Elizabethan Poor Laws through the transformative pressures of the Industrial Revolution to the early 20th century. Slater explores key themes such as the administration of relief, the rise of public health initiatives, and the shifting philosophies regarding the government's responsibility toward its most vulnerable citizens. By analyzing the historical successes and failures of state-led interventions, the book provides essential context for the foundations of the modern welfare state.Focused on the intersection of history, economics, and political science, 'Poverty and the State' offers a rigorous analysis of the institutional response to poverty. It remains a valuable resource for those interested in the history of social justice, public administration, and the ongoing debate over the state's role in ensuring the well-being of its population. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
