The Meaning of the Rationes Seminales in St. Augustine

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Meaning of the Rationes Seminales in St. Augustine' by Michael J. Mckeough is a scholarly exploration into one of the most intriguing aspects of Augustinian thought: the concept of 'rationes seminales,' or seminal reasons. This work delves deep into the metaphysical and theological framework developed by Saint Augustine to explain the unfolding of creation. By examining the interplay between divine intervention and the latent potentialities embedded within the natural world, Mckeough provides a comprehensive analysis of how the Great Doctor of the Church viewed the origins and development of living things. The book meticulously traces the history of the concept from its Stoic and Neoplatonic roots to its unique application in Augustine's biblical exegesis. Mckeough examines how these seminal seeds serve as the hidden blueprints for all future existences, allowing for a dynamic understanding of the universe that remains faithful to the doctrine of creation ex nihilo. This study is particularly valuable for those interested in the intersection of faith and reason, the history of medieval philosophy, and the early Christian precursors to developmental biology. It remains a significant contribution to the study of patristic theology and the enduring legacy of Augustine's intellectual synthesis. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
