Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Lupus of Ferrieres: As Scribe and Text Critic' provides an in-depth exploration of the scholarly contributions of Lupus Servatus, the 9th-century Abbot of Ferrières and a central figure of the Carolingian Renaissance. This work meticulously examines Lupus's role as one of the earliest and most influential textual critics of the Middle Ages, highlighting his dedication to the preservation and correction of classical Latin texts. The study delves into Lupus's unique scribal habits, his methodology for comparing manuscript variants, and his tireless efforts to locate and transcribe rare classical works. By analyzing his annotations and corrections found in surviving manuscripts-including the works of Cicero, Livy, and Aulus Gellius-author Charles Henry Beeson illustrates the sophisticated level of philological inquiry that existed centuries before the rise of Italian humanism. This book is an essential resource for students and scholars of medieval paleography, the history of the transmission of classical literature, and the intellectual culture of the Carolingian era.
