The Logic of Modern Physics

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Logic of Modern Physics' is a landmark work in the philosophy of science, authored by Nobel Prize-winning physicist P.W. Bridgman. Written during the transformative era of relativity and quantum theory, this influential treatise introduces and defends the principle of operationalism-the revolutionary idea that physical concepts are defined solely by the operations used to measure them. By applying this rigorous standard, Bridgman seeks to clarify the conceptual foundations of physics and eliminate the ambiguities that often arise when classical intuition meets modern scientific discovery.Throughout the text, Bridgman subjects fundamental notions such as space, time, and causality to a meticulous logical critique. He explores the implications of the shift from Newtonian mechanics to newer paradigms, arguing that the progress of science depends on a precise understanding of the relationship between mathematical theory and experimental practice. His insights provide a framework for evaluating the validity of scientific constructs and the limits of physical inquiry. As a foundational text for both physicists and philosophers, 'The Logic of Modern Physics' offers a profound examination of how we categorize and interpret the natural world. Its emphasis on clarity, empiricism, and the methodology of research ensures its enduring relevance in the study of the logical structures that define our understanding of the universe. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
