Juvenal and Persius : Loeb Classical Library

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Juvenal and Persius' presents the works of two of the most influential satirists of ancient Rome, offering a vivid and often biting critique of Roman society during the first and early second centuries AD. This collection brings together the sixteen satires of Juvenal and the six satires of Persius, providing readers with a comprehensive look at the moral and social landscape of the Roman Empire.Juvenal is renowned for his fierce indignation and masterful use of rhetoric, targeting the corruption, decadence, and hypocrisy he observed in the capital. His famous phrases and sharp wit have left an indelible mark on Western literature, shaping the genre of satire for centuries. In contrast, Persius offers a more philosophical and Stoic perspective, focusing on internal moral improvement and the pursuit of wisdom. His works are characterized by their intensity, complexity, and deep commitment to ethical living.Translated by G.G. Ramsay, this volume captures the spirit and nuances of the original Latin texts. Whether exploring Juvenal's vivid depictions of urban life or Persius's intellectual rigor, these satires remain essential reading for anyone interested in classical literature, Roman history, and the enduring human struggle with vice and virtue. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
