Italian Landscape in Eighteenth Century England : A Study Chiefly of the Influence of Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa on English Taste, 1700-1800

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Italian Landscape in Eighteenth Century England' is a comprehensive study exploring the profound impact of Italian visual arts on British aesthetic sensibilities during the 1700s. Elizabeth Wheeler Manwaring provides a detailed analysis of how the works of master painters, specifically Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa, dictated the evolution of English taste in art, literature, and landscape design. The work examines the rise of the 'Picturesque' movement, tracing how the serene, classical vistas of Lorrain and the wild, rugged romanticism of Rosa influenced not only the collection habits of the British aristocracy but also the very landscape of the English countryside. By investigating the intersection of painting and poetry, the author demonstrates how these continental artistic ideals were imported and adapted, eventually leading to the creation of the iconic English landscape garden. This scholarly exploration serves as an essential resource for understanding the cultural exchange between Italy and England, offering insight into how a century of art appreciation redefined the perception of nature and beauty in the British Isles. It remains a foundational text for students of art history, landscape architecture, and 18th-century cultural studies. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
