The Gang : A Study of 1,313 Gangs in Chicago

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Gang: A Study of 1,313 Gangs in Chicago' is a seminal work in the field of urban sociology and criminology, offering an exhaustive and pioneering investigation into the collective life of youth in a rapidly growing American metropolis. Based on years of direct observation and meticulous research, Frederic Milton Thrasher examines the social environment of the interstitial areas-the slums and industrial zones where social control is weakest and gang life flourishes.Through a detailed analysis of over a thousand groups, the study maps the evolution of gangs from spontaneous play groups into organized entities with their own codes, hierarchies, and territories. Thrasher explores the impact of poverty, immigration, and family breakdown on the development of these associations, providing a comprehensive look at the urban underworld of the early 20th century. This work established foundational concepts for the Chicago School of Sociology, highlighting the critical relationship between physical urban space and human behavior. 'The Gang: A Study of 1,313 Gangs in Chicago' remains a vital resource for understanding the roots of juvenile delinquency, group dynamics, and the enduring complexities of urban social structures. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
