The Duke Endowment

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Duke Endowment' is the foundational document and statement of purpose by industrialist James B. Duke, establishing one of the United States' most significant philanthropic legacies. Created in 1924, this work outlines the vision and structured distribution of wealth intended to bolster higher education, healthcare, and spiritual life in the Carolinas. Central to the text is the formal establishment of Duke University, alongside provisions for non-profit hospitals, child care institutions, and the support of rural Methodist churches.Through this indenture, Duke details his philosophy on social responsibility and the strategic use of private resources for the public good. The document serves as a primary source for understanding the intersection of industrial wealth and institutional development in the early 20th century. It highlights the benefactor's specific interest in regional progress, focusing on sustainable improvements in quality of life through the support of universities, medical facilities, and community organizations. For historians of philanthropy and Southern regional development, 'The Duke Endowment' offers an essential look into the administrative and moral framework that continues to shape educational and social landscapes today. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
