Daedalus : Science and the Future

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Daedalus or Science and the Future' is a visionary and provocative essay that explores the profound impact of scientific advancement on the human condition. Written by the pioneering biologist J. B. S. Haldane, this work serves as a foundational text in the field of transhumanism and speculative science. Haldane adopts the perspective of a future historian to examine how biological and chemical discoveries might reshape society, ethics, and the physical nature of humanity itself. The book is perhaps most famous for introducing the concept of ectogenesis-the development of human embryos in artificial environments-and for its candid assessment of how scientific innovation often appears blasphemous or horrific to the contemporary observer. By invoking the Greek myth of Daedalus, the ingenious inventor who dared to defy the limits of nature, Haldane challenges readers to consider the moral responsibilities that accompany great knowledge. 'Daedalus or Science and the Future' remains a landmark of twentieth-century thought, offering a startlingly prescient look at the intersection of biology, technology, and human evolution. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
