The City Wall of Imperial Rome : An Account of Its Architectural Development From Aurelian to Narses

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The City Wall of Imperial Rome' offers a definitive architectural study of one of antiquity's most impressive defensive structures. This work meticulously traces the development of the city's fortifications from their initial construction under Emperor Aurelian in the third century to the extensive repairs and modifications made during the time of Narses in the sixth century. The text explores the engineering challenges, stylistic evolutions, and strategic necessities that shaped the wall's history. Through detailed analysis of the towers, gates, and curtain walls, Ian A. Richmond provides a comprehensive account of how Rome's physical boundary adapted to the changing military and political landscape of the later Empire. This volume is an essential resource for students of Roman history, classical archaeology, and military architecture, offering deep insights into the structural legacy of the Eternal City. Readers will find a thorough examination of construction techniques, materials, and the tactical significance of the wall's design. By documenting the transitions from late Roman to early Byzantine styles, the book illuminates the broader historical shifts occurring within the imperial capital during this transformative period. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
