Cancels

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Cancels' is a foundational work of analytical bibliography that explores the intricate physical history of book production. Written by the renowned scholar R. W. Chapman, this study provides a comprehensive examination of cancels-the practice of replacing a leaf or leaves of a book after the original sheets have been printed but before the final binding. This technique was frequently employed by printers and publishers to correct errors, remove potentially libelous content, or update information without the expense of reprinting an entire work.Through detailed examples and technical analysis, Chapman illustrates how cancels can be identified by the discerning bibliographer and what they reveal about the editorial and commercial pressures of the hand-press and early machine-press eras. The volume delves into the mechanics of the cancellans and cancellandum, offering essential insights for collectors, librarians, and literary historians interested in the evolution of the printed word.As a vital contribution to the field of book history, 'Cancels' remains an indispensable resource for understanding the complexities of book structure and the often-hidden history of textual revision. It highlights the intersection of material culture and literary scholarship, making it a key text for anyone dedicated to the study of rare books and historical publishing practices. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
