This historical account details the formation and experiences of organized companies from Massachusetts as they navigated the perilous routes to the Pacific coast. Whether traveling by sea around Cape Horn, across the Isthmus of Panama, or overland via wagon trains, these 'Argonauts' faced extraordinary challenges in their pursuit of fortune.Octavius T. Howe provides a meticulous look at the logistics, social dynamics, and personal narratives of these emigrant groups. The work highlights the unique regional character of the Massachusetts companies, often composed of neighbors and professionals who brought a distinct sense of order and community to the chaotic environment of the gold fields. Through diaries, letters, and contemporary records, the narrative captures the spirit of adventure and the harsh realities of mid-19th-century migration.
