After spending his high school years on a farm near Salem, Oregon, Joe Kraus was voted most likely to succeed in his North Salem High School journalism class. It was all the encouragement he needed. That’s because after his military service and college, he ended up as a managing editor on several daily newspapers. His first national magazine article was published while he was still in high school. And over the years, some 300 articles followed, published in more than sixty different national periodicals. Later he founded two national magazines, The Autograph Collectors Magazine and then Child Stars Magazine. His first book, Alive in the Desert: The Complete Guide for Desert Survival and Recreation (now out of print), was used in the popular TV series, Air Wolf starring Ernest Borgnine. A 2017 revised edition of this book has the title, Staying Alive in the Desert: The Complete Guide for Desert Survival. He wrote a TV commercial for the popular singer Kris Kristofferson and the script for the 37th Annual Young Artist Award in Hollywood, televised by PBS. His book, Tales from the Deep: The Life and Times of the USS Manatee and Its Always Ready and Sometimes Willing Crew, was published earlier in 2017, as was The Famous & Successful: Their Advice For All Of Us which he co-wrote with Ron Stovall. This was followed by Desert Rats: They Came with a Pick, a Shovel, and a Dream. His latest book is Children Who Ruled the World: True stories out of Egypt, China, England, France, and Russia. Married to his wife, Karren for nearly fifty years, they have three grown children and six grandchildren.
