FROM IRELAND’S SHORES to the streets of New York, the story of the outlawed secret society known as the Fenian Brotherhood unfolded against the backdrop of America’s bloody Civil War. The stakes were high for the thousands of Irish soldiers who fought so bravely at Antietam and Gettysburg, for once Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in Virginia, the desperate struggle to free Ireland from British occupation began in the hills of Erin. For one of those veterans, Captain James O’Mannion, and his Irish-American sweetheart, Mina Rourke, the price of the unending conflict was bitter, indeed. In the sacred service of Irish liberation, there was no time for the luxury of individual happiness. There was work to be done, risk to be taken, and loss to be faced. This epic novel, based on historical fact, is far more than a love story. It is a tale of faith tested to the limits of endurance. It is a melting pot of battle, betrayal, family, folly, and hurt. But through pain comes birth, for a clan and for a nation. As the Irish offered up their own lives, they earned what cannot be sold: immortality
