Inhaltsangabe

Participate in natural design. Meditate on beauty. Learn how nature generates marvelous patterns. This coloring book also unveils the mathematical elegance underlying the dynamic patterning of flowers and plants, explaining how the golden ratio and Fibonacci numbers are implicated. The book is intended for all ages. Anyone will see the hypnotic beauty of the images. Parents and teachers will appreciate how this combines science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Thus the material addresses STEM and STEAM educational objectives, while capturing the elegance of a natural process. Coloring in the complex and elegant images is a way to become more mindful of the subtle structural beauty of floral and plant patterns and how they change. Next time you look at a sunflower or other flowers and plants, look beyond the bright, vibrant colors. Look for spirals and count the numbers. Look deeply and discover these hidden treasures. The coloring book includes a meditation designed to help bring more mindfulness to the coloring process. The book also includes a flower walk meditation to extend the mindfulness into daily life. We can enjoy the beauty of a flower, unaware of processes that created the patterns. But if these underlying processes generating these patterns interest you, then you’re in for a real treat. Read the section at the end of this book, where you will discover the mathematical elegance underlying the dynamic patterning of flowers and plants. I created images with a computer model of sunflower growth to make this coloring book. As I discuss in the final section, you can experiment with this model at: http://flockecogames.com. I discuss how very small changes in the turn angle can drastically change the final patterns. The model shows how the patterns change over time. The front and back covers, and the background section pages at the end, suggest some ways to color. You may find it easier to find the spirals by starting on the outer edges, where the patterns are larger and more distinct, and working your way inwards. Markers or colored pencils work well. Try your own way. Have fun!
