The Dream: Graduate, with honors, from Peoria Central High. Attend Bradley College on a basketball scholarship. Become a fighter pilot for the Army Air Corps. Play basketball professionally while training for the US Olympics. Settle into a career as a long-distance truck driver. The Life: Graduated from Peoria Central High 137 in a class of 250. Gave up basketball when height peaked at 5’9”. Got parents to pay for first two years of college. Joined the Army Air Corps to become a fighter pilot in the Korean War only to have the B29 deemed obsolete and a truce declared. Returned to Knox College on the G.I. Bill. Graduated with a BA in 1956. Got married. Had three daughters and settled into a career as a writer and photographer. Bill was born in Peoria, Illinois in 1932. He died of natural causes in 2010. In his own words, “it was a good life and I wouldn’t have done it any other way.”
