Moving electrons create a magnetic field. Moving electrons in an atom can create a permanent magnet. Moving electrons in a wire, particularly a coil of wire, can create an electromagnet. Magnetic fields have North and South poles; North and North repel each other, as do South and South; North and South attract each other. This attraction or repulsion of magnetic fields is at the heart of many machines such as motors or generators, junkyard magnets, doorbells the telegraph and many, many others.
