AMERICA’S DAUGHTER
She arrived in America with nothing but a scholarship, a borrowed suitcase, a borrowed name, her drum and a soul full of dance. But America had a lesson she didn’t expect: before she could become herself, she had to learn how to be Black.
Maria Nhambu grew up in a Tanzanian orphanage in East Africa, raised by German nuns, abandoned at birth for being biracial. She survived through dance, faith, and that one fierce inner voice she called Fat Mary.
In America’s Daughter, she crosses the Atlantic, and walks straight into a world that sees only the color of her skin.
She navigates the shock of 1960s America: Racial slurs that cut deeper than anything the orphanage ever threw at her. The surreal task of learning Black American culture from the outside. But Maria is not a woman who breaks. She builds. She graduates. She teaches. She marries and starts a family. She blends into American life. And then Africa calls her back, and she decides to share her love of Africa with America through dance. She creates Aerobics With Soul®, a fitness program rooted in African dance that captures the heart of America.
In the middle of it all, her birth mother appears bringing some answers to Nhambu’s questions about her life. But one question is never answered: Who is my father?
When her birth mother dies without ever speaking his name, Nhambu and her half-brother Larry make a quiet decision. They will go back to Tanzania together, back to the landscape that holds whatever truth remains. Africa’s child is going home as America’s daughter, and the search that will define the final chapter of her life is about to begin.
This is a story about belonging to two worlds and being claimed by both. About the family you are born into, the family you are given, and the family you build with your own love.
Perfect for readers who loved I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, Becoming by Michelle Obama, and The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Maria Nhambu—educator, dancer, writer, mother, entrepreneur, and philanthropist—was raised by German missionary nuns in an orphanage for mixed-race children high in the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania. A twenty-three-year-old American woman adopted her at age nineteen and brought her to America for college. Nhambu is the creator of Aerobics With Soul®—the African Workout based on the dances she learned growing up in Tanzania.
