'A refreshing and amusing read simply because the storyline is based on a scam which could happen to anyone. A very topical situation. I especially enjoyed the heroine, Cynthia, as I am about the same age as her! Janet makes it easy to viaualise the story - her descriptive writing is excellent. Cynthia's unlikely companion,Tracey, is the "practical" one (having learned certain skills in prison) to Cynthia's basic snobbery. They are chalk and cheese but each with their own abilities to cope with a dire situation brought about by their shared passion for their Nigerian men! The ending made me hold my breath, thinking: "how could she be so naive" but... Just read the book to see what happens. Janet - I really enjoyed it. 'I adore this book. Could it be because I see myself as similar to its heroine Cynthia? Very probably! Cynthia is a white, middle-class Surrey housewife and stalwart of the bridge club, until her dull husband Colin pops his clogs and she finds herself a new lease of life in an extremely unexpected place. Modern day story, with serendipity around every twist and turn.I meandered easily through the different characters.Look out for the passage about the parrot - you will not be disappointed. As I kept reading the book I was unable to put it down but, also, I kept seeing this as an adaption of a film.It literally played out before my eyes, quite incredible. throughout; as I kept laughing out loud. Cynthia is a sixty-year-old widow who believes she is modern and broad minded, and therefore equipped to deal with the modern world.
Despite leading a sheltered and somewhat corporate life with her husband for nearly forty years, the feisty character is happy to take on many things including the sexual demands of a 38-year-old Nigerian lover, the vagaries of the internet and all it has to offer, including organised crime and injustice.
Against a backdrop of bridge club membership, golf and sitting as a local magistrate, her life unfolds thanks to a series of decisions ones she makes in the absence of guidance from her late husband, family or friends.
What starts off as a vague interest in email and the web escalates into a series of problems. When she receives a 'Dear Beneficiary' email offering her millions of dollars, she believes her former lover wants her to go to Lagos to share his good fortune and reunite their passion.
Painfully naïve of the issues of deception surrounding today's technology, she is duped into travelling to Nigeria, where she meets with a string of events ending with her being captured by '419-ers' who hold her - and a particularly common woman (Tracey) she meets on the plane - to ransom...
