Arguably there are two orientations to possibility in life. In his adventure of turning hesitantly from one to the other Matthews reveals the duality of the human condition: one is neither as in control as one often appears nor as out of control as one sometimes feels. The reflexivity of these poems distils interiority from observation and sediments the world from reflection. Which one realizes first is a matter of orientation initially of the author but ultimately of the reader. As an artist Matthews is an opportunist: words are a material to be worked and reworked until idea, music and image resolve into an artefact.
