Reflecting on Humanity: Gabo Guzzo’s Precarious Perversion Navigates the Interplay of Nature, Culture, and Myth. Precarious Perversion by Gabo Guzzo is a collection of 91 very short stories—micro-episodes of everyday life—that invite us to reflect on human nature and what it means to be human today. These brief narratives venture into the uncharted territories of human agency within the Anthropocene, the epoch defined by humanity’s profound impact on the planet. In Precarious Perversion, Gabo Guzzo employs an interdisciplinary approach and non-linear structure that transcend the boundaries of traditional storytelling. Each story weaves together elements of writing, painting, music, and other artistic disciplines, creating an engaging multisensory experience where readers don’t just consume text—they read, feel, see, and listen simultaneously. This fusion of art forms invites readers to immerse themselves fully in the narrative, encouraging a deeper emotional and intellectual connection to the themes. Precarious Perversion expands on Precarious Perversion expands on Guzzo’s earlier participatory and interdisciplinary project, The Geological Turn: Art and the Anthropocene, developed during his residency at Banner Repeater. This project was a collaboration with atmospheric chemist and Nobel Laureate Paul Crutzen, art historian T.J. Demos, geologist Jan Zalasiewicz, and artist and writer Rasheed Araeen. Inspired by the connection between two words—precarity and perversion—that emerged during the art residency’s participatory and collectively drawn diagram, the stories in Precarious Perversion navigate the intriguing interplay between nature and culture, science and myth, and chance and control. The Geological Turn proved groundbreaking as the first artist-led initiative to address the concept of the Anthropocene.
