KL Wells was raised both in the Washington, D. C. area and on a 20,000-acre Montana cattle ranch just north of Yellowstone National Park. This daughter of an Episcopalian minister grew up surrounded by successful entrepreneurs…and cowboys! Before starting her own successful non-profit consulting practice in the early 1990s, KL worked as a horse wrangler, basketball referee, college student adviser while getting a Master’s Degree in Counseling, life insurance salesperson, retail bank manager, and non-profit development director. For more than twenty years, KL has consulted with hundreds of non-profit organizations, effectively co-leading initiatives with CEOs, senior executives, boards, trustees and philanthropists that have attracted hundreds of millions of dollars and created dramatic organizational and community-wide changes. Working in both rural and urban settings, KL has worked with organizations, centers, universities, public/private partnerships and programs related to medicine, cultural arts, wildlife conservation, environmental sustainability, child abuse prevention, homelessness, indigenous leadership, disabilities, aging, children’s services, urban reclamation and more. She has designed, led, and implemented countless capacity-building initiatives; innovative inter-generational civic engagement initiatives; a ground-breaking visionary project called “Positive Images of Aging” in Florida; co-pioneered innovations in philanthropy applied throughout the world; and trained thousands of non-governmental leaders and volunteers to be more effective in their vocations. Her ground-breaking work in philanthropy, organizational development and community-wide engagement initiatives is featured in Jim Lord’s seminal book, "What Kind of World Do You Want?"
