John Jay Chapman (1862-1933) was one of America's greatest essayists. He wrote a number of essays about what colleges ought to be and what they should not be. Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Alan Contreras is a graduate of the University of Oregon and its law school. His writing has appeared in the Stanford Law and Policy Review, Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education and many other venues. He served as co-editor of Birds of Oregon (Oregon State University Press, 2003). OSU Press recently published Afield (2009), his memoir about the experience of watching birds for 40 years. OSU also issued Handbook of Oregon Birds (2009, with Hendrik Herlyn) and Northwest Birds in Winter (1996). Recent books include College and State: Resources and Philosophies, Song After All: Letters of Reginald Shepherd and Alan Contreras and The Mind on Edge: An Introduction to John Jay Chapman’s Philosophy of Higher Education. He has also published poetry and reviews in several venues. He lives in Eugene, Oregon.
