Inhaltsangabe

Geometry is much more than a study of lines and angles. Behind circles and squares lies a world of deep symbolism. Architects of the medieval Cathedral of Chartres have explored this world and translated it into stunning architecture. Through rhyming lines, this book illuminates how to use geometry to read the chief stories, as well as the rich and many-layered symbolic language embedded in the cathedral's architecture and in its famous stained-glass windows.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Han Tran has a doctorate in Classics from UC Berkeley and is currently a lecturer at the University of Miami at Coral Gables. Her area of expertise is in classical and world myth, as well as in ancient religions. She has also previously taught at The Ohio State University and the University of Oregon. A deep interest in distilling knowledge and making it accessible to a young audience has led her to collaborate with Montessori school director, Christinia Cheung. Ms. Cheung directs a Bay Area bilingual school educating children from 3 months of age to 18 years, where she has seen first-hand a vital need for books that both treat subjects in greater depth and that are also designed with the aim of leading children to become more reflective and more aware -- of the world, of the past, and of others. The collaboration between Dr. Tran and Ms. Cheung reflects a belief in the power of storytelling as a way of engaging the mind while encouraging thoughtfulness and personal responsibility.

Aus dem Klappentext

Hands-on-Prints offers a wide spectrum of learning materials, stories and poems that are not only informative but designed also to broaden consciousness, encourage mindfulness, and inspire the best in children. The reading levels we offer include beginning (ages three to six), intermediate (elementary schoolchildren), and advanced (middle and high-school students). For each level, we have devised various series, each covering subject areas appropriate for that specific stage of development, and encouraging the student's analytical skills through stimulating topics, novel presentation, and evocative graphic work in a range of media (including acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media) and styles (from the minutely detailed and realistic to the lyrical and painterly). We believe that visual literacy is a key ingredient in forming the mind and refining cognitive skills. We view illustrations not as merely decorative and cosmetic, but as integral parts of the learning experience. This is the basis of our seeking out work by emerging artists from a broad spectrum of backgrounds in the arts and working closely with them to produce books that are a feast for the mind and the eye alike.
