Where is Downtown Imperial Beach? If you ask five people who live in the area you would get pondering expressions, followed by five different answers. The real answer is, there is no such place as Downtown Imperial Beach. In this book, the homegrown author provides a history of his efforts to persuade local citizens that a Downtown IB is an urgent priority. He describes a “Means to Make it a Reality”, where the wealth created by such an endeavor is formed and kept within the community. A Downtown IB would be the nucleus from which desperately needed homegrown institutions could grow, ranging from bakeries to a local IB Savings and Loan. The author also provides specific recommendations to address other pressing disparity issues that have long faced the people of the IB Area. These include a solution to the ongoing sewage, trash, and erosion problems affecting the TJ River Valley, an Institute of Higher Education, a Major Tourism Attraction (not located near the beach), Philanthropic Mansions & Membership Institutions and more. A special effort is made to describe the importance of Pond 20, the 95 acre parcel located behind 13th and Palm Avenue that was originally “set aside for development” by the San Diego Unified Port District. A case is made about the importance of using Pond 20 for true economic, social, and environmental advancement for the IB Area, and not another “Land Bank” to offset developer’s land mitigation needs to the North. Although using a direct and sometimes brash approach, the author presents a positive outlook for this precious community of South Bay, San Diego County.
