Inhaltsangabe

This contemporary story, Wapasha and the Rabbi, mirrors the lives of a small group, while reflecting on the universal power of the past to influence human lives. This is poignantly revealed not only in the stories told by the two protagonists, but also in the stories told by some of the young people, who share their lives with Rabbi Itsak Cohen on an isolated farm in the back country of Texas. Wapasha—a full-blooded American Indian, and the last Shaman of a dwindling Karankawan tribe—gained a medical school education, and is a practicing country doctor. The encounter of the Rabbi and Wapasha stunningly uncovers their compatible religious heritage, albeit from diametrically polar backgrounds. The Rabbi, a product of a European Jewish youth, while Wapasha’s Jewish faith was brought to the New World centuries earlier by a young Jew who had fled the Spanish Inquisition (as told in Selden’s book, The Shaman and the Jew). The supportive relationship that evolves between the Rabbi (a Holocaust survivor) and Wapasha (a Vietnam War veteran) is central to the tale. Though the cause of their post-traumatic anguish is different, they recognize that their lingering and distressing emotional responses are the same.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Howard S. Selden is the author of over thirty scientific papers published in Dentistry’s Journal of Endodontics (root canal therapy). During his career as a practicing Dental specialist he was also involved in teaching: he is a former Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Endodontology,Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, PA; helped establish Dental Departments in local hospitals to care for the indigent; and served as the Director of the Dental Department at the Muhlenberg Hospital Center, Bethlehem, PA. Following retirement, when asked, “What are you doing with yourself these days?” he answers that looking back on his life, wondering what influenced him and how he got here, led to the fulfilling solitary experience of writing stories. Having spent many years reading science fiction, it is not surprising his first published book, The Pariah Stigma, flowed easily in this genre. The Shaman and the Jew, an historical fiction novel, is a complex creative effort. Selden found the blending of fictitious characters and plot within an authentic historical framework a continuous challenge. His long-term interest in history helped. The many collected books, especially those on ancient history, offered handy reference for pertinent details. Access to supplementary information through a computer search was invaluable. From Selden’s earliest days as a Boy Scout, where he earned Eagle Scout rank, he recognized his interest in helping the injured and sick, leading inevitably to a career in Dentistry. In high school his role as manager of the football team offered many opportunities to aid the injured players, since in those days the helmets were soft leather, and there were no face or mouth guards—thus Dentists were kept busy replacing displaced and broken front teeth. As a long time alpine ski enthusiast, Selden, along with his wife and three children, enjoyed many a winter vacation. Howard lives in Easton, PA with his lovely wife Tamara
