The book describes the adventures of a cattleman who had all his life worked his cattle ranch and raised his family in a very hard environment. He finally broke free from his duties and took off to see the world. He rolled up his saddle, bridle, lariat rope, and a small duffel and stuffed them all in a gunny sack and headed out to see the ranching country of Brazil. He traveled the breadth of Brazil by airplane, bus, oxcart, pony-size horses, and farm trucks. He ate bats on a stick with a bunch of Indians around a campfire, herded cattle across a piranha infested river after the foreman shot a cow upstream to attract the piranhas while the cattle crossed. He wandered into a leper colony and when he discovered what he had gotten into he got out of there as fast as a man can run. He joined up with an Australian muster where he roped and pulled wild bulls from the thickets. He lived in a rattlesnake infested old ranch camp while he rode hard in a wild horse roundup on the plains of Montana. Many were his adventures after the age of 68, when most men want to sit and tell tales of when they were young.
