If we believe in Jesus Christ, that truth is so important that it touches every aspect of our life, every thought and word and deed. Faith changes our perspective of life and informs our participation in the nitty-gritty of the world. It is the vocation of the Christian, armed with faith, to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Your light must shine before others, Jesus instructed his disciples. (Cf. Mt 5:13-16) Faith, then, has a proper place in the classroom and courtroom, the bedroom and boardroom, and indeed everywhere else the Christian appears.

In my many years of profiling people from many walks of life, I have never met a man like Bishop Thomas J. Tobin nor a writer with such a gifted and distinctive voice. With humor and a common touch, he gently prompts us to reflect on the great theological, moral and cultural issues of our time. Whether Catholic or not, people of goodwill will find inspiration in Bishop Tobin s Effective Faith. G. Wayne Miller, Author and Journalist This collection of essays is an excellent resource for anyone reflecting on issues facing Catholics today. Each of [Bishop Tobin s] brief and very readable commentaries draws us into a deeper consideration of our every day experiences and the world around us. I highly recommend this book to everyone, no matter where they are in their spiritual journey. Sandra T. Keating, PhD, Associate Professor of Theology, Providence College Bishops are people, too! Meet a down-to-earth, self-effacing, witty human being who happens to be a Catholic priest and bishop. This collection of columns he s written for his diocesan newspapers deserves a wider audience because they teach about crucial contemporary issues.
