When the daughter of vaudeville singer Lillie Lantry is found at the bottom of a cliff on Mount Monadnock in 1910, the local police call it an accident, but Boston detective Robert de La Tour is not so certain. He and his brother, Eugene, a Boston newspaper reporter, comb the mountain for clues, visiting the Dublin Art Colony, the Halfway House hotel and Pumpelly Cave. They meet Mark Twain, Franklin Roosevelt, Robert Frost, prize fighter Jack Johnson, Red Sox pitcher Smoky Joe Wood and a host of other unusual people before discovering the shocking truth.
