WHEN STAR ATHLETES WERE HEROES… In an era that boasted scores of baseball greats such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, Hall of Famer Joe Cronin rose from a seldom used shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1927 to American League MVP in 1930. Joe went on to become player-manager, general manager and finally American League President, the first player ever to have risen to that office. In Your Face - In Your Heart includes these exciting career highlights: At 26, the youngest manager to lead his team to the pennant Sold to the Boston Red Sox for $250,000, the most ever spent at that time for a player at time even more than was paid for Babe Ruth! Served as player-manager for the Red Sox for 13 seasons and then general manager for 11 seasons Joe Cronin was a true sports hero. In contrast, today s sports stars are more likely to take the spotlight for their arrests or the use of performance-enhancing drugs than for their athletic prowess. Bob Gorman has given us the story of a humble, hard-working athlete that serves as a reminder of what heroes really are.
