The history of R-CALF USA is a testament to the courage and conviction of the people who comprise America’s economic, social, and cultural backbone. It was a common thread of courage and conviction with a little dab of fate throw in that brought a small group of ranchers together in the late 1990s to explore the reasons behind the cattle market collapse. Among other things, that group of small ranchers recognized that live cattle producers were the only segment of the beef supply chain that did not have an organization exclusively representing their interests and that live cattle producers had been relegated to a secondary position within the hierarchy of the supply chain. It was that group which unmasked the reality that segments of the cattle and beef industries are antagonistic to one another and that, despite any good intentions, one single organization could not hope to represent the interest of all segments of such a diverse industry. Thus, R-CALF was born.
