World of Books began as a commemorative project when I was invited to create a book for the exhibition, Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, honoring the booksellers of Baghdad, many of whom were killed and wounded in a car bombing in March 2007. For this project, artists were invited to create books to honor the power of words, our ties to literary and intellectual life the world over. My idea was to gather pictures of books as a symbolic replacement for those that were destroyed. I sent out a request to friends and colleagues to send me a photograph of one of their bookshelves. The resulting images are assembled here. Each image is a personal essay on the special role books and reading plays in our lives. The cumulative effect of page after page of these individual bookshelves is a powerful reminder that we are perpetually thirsty for knowledge and the freedom to pursue it. None of us can imagine a world without books. “No way books will die out,” writes one of the contributors. In the words accompanying these photographs, I sense a deep attachment to books as personal objects we can (and must) hold and touch. Cyber technology has yet to supersede our need to physically possess the books we love. The spirit that springs from these pages celebrates the freedom to think, read, and write. World of Books is dedicated to all who cherish the unrestricted expression and exchange of ideas.
