In his first monograph Rantoul presents high-quality black-and-white duotones of his American Series work, narrative photographs from various locations around the United States. This work, extensively exhibited but never before published, began in the 1980s. Rantoul shows contemporary housing developments and architecture contrasted with natural forms and rural scenes that add up to a unique and moving perspective on our country. In ten image-based "chapters" Rantoul shares his perceptions of our surroundings with wit, compassion, humor, and insight. These beautiful and evocative photographs lead us to a better understanding of the relationship we all have to the natural and man-made.
