Aus dem Klappentext

The CSS David made an attack against one of the most powerful ships in the world, the USS New Ironsides, in Charleston, South Carolina, during the American Civil War. It severely damaged the New Ironsides, but did not sink it. The David was one of the first boats of the modern era of warships. She broke away from a pattern of combat ships that had existed for over 300 years. The David's revolutionary features were: * The boat was powered by steam, not the wind. * The David had no cannons. Instead, it was fitted with a black powder torpedo. * The little boat was one of the very first stealth vessels. It was made to be stealthy not from radar, but from human vision. The David is one of the direct ancestors of present day surface attack ships. Following the Civil War, many nations deployed small, steam powered torpedo boats with their navies. This led to larger and faster destroyers, corvettes and destroyer escorts. The missions of the PT (Patrol Torpedo) boats of WWII would have been instantly recognizable to the members of the David's crew. Both struck at night, in enemy controlled waters, in small wooden boats against enemy ships that dwarfed them in size. The argument can be made that the David was actually the world's first PT boat.
