It was in the costume jewelry section of the city mall’s Park Lane Hosiery Boutique where I spent the fourteen dollars ninety-nine cents plus tax. December 1977, I begged my Mother for a loan and bought a fools-gold necklace with a heart-shape charm. It was a Christmas gift for Eleanor Roma, the dreamiest girl in the fourth-grade. I had to make her mine. At age ten I was already a Romeo in the making. I never expected Ellen to choose Richard Tate and a pair of silly earrings over me and my fifteen-dollar necklace. I was stunned. Stunned and confused. Why would she do such a thing? Why? What did Richard have that I didn’t? Had I somehow failed her? How? It would riddle my world for years to come.

The person I most often failed as a child? My father. He was a stern military man. Teaching me not to take shortcuts (or was it cutting things short?) was his only mission in life. My dad’s favorite battle grounds were the weed-infested landscapes of every home we ever lived in. He insisted I pull the roots of the weeds or the job was not done. He’d tell me if I didn’t get the roots I’d be pulling until I did. What was the big deal with the roots? The weeds were gone from sight, who cared? He did. Not heeding his orders kept me busy many an afternoon while other kids got to play. This went on for some time. Had I listened to my dad I would not detest Dandelions today.

At eighteen, this Romeo moved out of his parent’s home and began to discover life, love, and the beauty of concrete. I quickly developed a new respect for the man I’d considered a thorn in my side, hands, knees, pretty much everywhere. I also began to notice the effects typical romantic gifts had on women. Flowers and candy were like pulling the tops off weeds and leaving the roots behind. Then it hit me, maybe I should get what she liked and not what I thought she wanted. But how was I supposed to know she wanted? What if I simply asked? Hey, yeah!

I learned that beneath the surface of every woman lies unique and critical information valuable to men. A man need only listen to it. To get a hold of general information is simple, but to get a hold of (and keep) a good woman a man must be an awesome listener. What I once considered my father’s cruel and unusual punishment actually turned out to be a valuable lesson in listening. It took me nearly a decade to literally dig up the answer to the riddle Eleanor Roma left me. Underneath it all, dangling from the bottom of those earrings (I once thought silly) were long healthy roots. Richard knew what she liked. Thinking I knew her without doing my homework, I handed Eleanor the top of a prickly weed. Years later the moral of my story still stands strong. "To really make a woman happy it can take years or a man can just use his ears." What do you get when you cross Romeo with a great gardener?
