By forcing us to look at economic innovation in these wide terms, Mr. Kingston has made a significant contribution where conventional economists have virtually declared themselves bankrupt, leaving the task of exploration to a rather small band of specialists, historians, and an occasional poet of the creative process like Jacob Bronowski. The author has thought deeply about the problems of creativity in business, and, I should guess, lived with them. His book is a personal statement about an intensely human process. It is worth reading at a time when industrial civilization will require heroic efforts if it is not to be overwhelmed by excessive population increase; food, energy and raw material supply; and the problems of pollution control. --By W.
