Kay Mackenzie caught the quilt pox ten years ago and has been working on a quilting project or eight ever since. A specialist in hand applique and miniatures, Kay has brought home numerous awards from judged competitions. Kay is also proficient at computer illustration, and now brings her love for quilting together with her writing and illustrating skills in her first title, Dog Cabin and Others: A Fast Fun Theme-Quilt Project. Kay lives with her husband, three cats, and one dog in Santa Cruz, California.

In most block construction, it's "cut, then sew." You cut patches exactly the right size, then sew them together with absolute precision. If everything isn't perfect, the blocks won't come out right or fit with each other. That's a lot to expect, and that's why every quilter owns a seam ripper or twelve.

The blocks in this project are put together using a different approach: "sew, then cut." The result: accuracy without agony!

For the color scheme, there's no scientific analysis of the spectrum involved. In fact, there's nothing more elaborate for fabric choice that if it "goes." (And if you think it goes, it goes!) Fabrics are put together creatively and spontaneously. Blocks are trimmed and squared during construction. It's all practically measureless, and no templates in sight.

Experienced quilters will find this an enjoyable romp, a vacation from lengthy materials lists and intricate shape cutting.
