This is my job, it s not my life. If you believe this is true, then this book is for you. If you believe this is false, then this book is for you. If you separate your attitudes and behaviors into at work and life categories, then we hope to illustrate how you may be missing out on a whole lot of good things, since you spend a large portion of your waking hours, and your energy, in a work setting. It makes sense that the values we want in our lives should be present wherever we are living them. If you believe that your behavior at work counts just as much as it counts when you are with friends and family, we hope these pages will encourage you to keep doing what you are doing, and perhaps even find ways to increase the number of positive actions you take to affect the quality of your days, and the days of those you live and work with. We believe that all jobs are human service jobs. We work alongside people for the benefit of other people, no matter what we are doing. When we are working alone it is still usually for the benefit of others. When we are not at work, our actions are still in great part performed with other people s wants and needs in mind. Being aware of and employing on purpose behaviors to improve our human services both at work and in life in general these are the reasons for putting together this book. Note These pages are made up of collected columns we have published individually over some years. They represent our attempt to share our ideas and learnings from both of our career fields, and from interacting with diverse organizations, schools, hospitals, factories, banks and other businesses around the country.
