The Christian Year Series is a group of Chrismons explaining our Lord's life and the nature of the Godhead within the framework of the Liturgical Year. Since 1960 this large double loop or figure 8 has appeared on the front of our original Chrismon tree. Instructions are provided for making each ornament which can be used individually or displayed on a frame as we have done at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. The emphasis on this set of Chrismons deviates from the original monograms to symbols and crosses. The lamb and the pelican, the gladiolus and the vine as well as many other ancient and cherished symbols for God - our Lord, the Father, and the Spirit - are used. While each design in the group has its own historical interpretation, its use with the others in the set gives it new and deeper meanings. By using the Chrismons of the Christian Year as a theme, one can tell a connected story about our Lord and God not only at Christmas time but throughout the year. It has been used as a teaching aid on many occasions for groups both in and outside the church. The instructions include a complete interpretation, which has been used as the basis for Christmas worship programs. In addition to the church size patterns, reduced size patterns for home use are included for all the designs.

Mrs. Francis Kipps Spencer volunteered to decorate the Christmas tree at Ascension Lutheran Church in hopes of eliminating the practice of a tree in the sanctuary, or at least making it more appropriate to faith. Through research of ancient symbols of the Christian faith she discovered monograms of Christ or Chrismons. Mrs. Spencer was inspired to use the Christ's monograms and designed and created 54 large ornaments and 72 small ornaments along with the star for the tree during the 40 day season of Advent in 1957. The church embraced the practice of Chrismons and Mrs. Spencer continued to design and make new patterns until her death. Directions were compiled an printed in books as Mrs. Spencer held workshops and traveled to teach others how to make this meaningful ornaments for their own tree. It was her goal that the ornaments never be sold for profit, but made by hand with faith and love for the church or given as gifts. Mrs. Spencer continued to design and create new Chrismons Ornaments until her death. The four original Chrismons pattern books include the following: BASIC SERIES ADVANCED SERIES CHRISTIAN YEAR SERIES CHRISMONS FOR EVERYDAY CHRISMONS (A condensed explanation of the symbolism of all the ornaments on our tree) New additions: CROSSES AND CROWNS (Home and church size interpretations of server beaded ornaments.) Samuel Sparrow and the tree of light children's book
