J.R. Stoddard has been researching cougar behavior since 1996 after having an unusual experience while fishing alone in a remote area of the Hoe River in the Olympic National Forest of north western Washington. His parents took him on his first camping trip before he could walk. He spent weeks every summer in remote mountain areas of Northern California, Idaho, Utah and Oregon camping, hiking, fishing and hunting. Sometimes on these trips the family would not see another person for over a week. As an adult he spent much of his leisure time hiking and backpacking with his family. In all these years he never saw a cougar in the wild. After his experience at the Hoe River a question compelled him. 'If I've never seen a cougar in all my travels in the woods, why are they showing up in people's backyards?' This question was the beginning of a quest to learn more about these elusive animals.J.R. Stoddard is a retired Naval Flight Officer with over 4,000 hours of flight time from both aircraft carriers and land based stations. He lives in the Puget Sound area of Washington State and is the head coach of a men's swimming team and assistant coach of a woman's volleyball team at a high school
